Doctrine of lapse was a policy of britain to annex indian states to british control. It was introduced by lord Dalhousie who was the governor general from 1848 to 1856. As per the hindu law a ruler who died without legal heirs can adopt a son and the person could be the next ruler. By implementing doctrine of lapse the ruler of the states who didnt have a legal heir couldnt adopt a son and that state would be annexed to british india when he died. Jhansi, jabalpur, satara, nagpur jaitpur were the states annexed to british india by this policy
